Two players, two ways to get together
On one PC: choose local split-screen. On separate PCs: use online co-op. One full-game owner can bring a friend along with the free Friend's Pass.
You need exactly two players and an arranged partner; there is no automatic matchmaking. These instructions cover the Steam version.
Which setup is yours?
Online play with Friend's Pass
Have the owner launch the full WheelMates game and the friend install WheelMates Friend's Pass. These two versions use different menu routes. Follow your own column below, then pass the invitation code from the owner to the friend.
Follow the code from host to guest
OWNER'S PC
Full WheelMates game
- Launch the full game. This is the player hosting the session.
- Open the hosting menu.
- Use . Send that code to your friend.
FRIEND'S PC
WheelMates Friend's Pass
- Install and launch Friend's Pass. This is the player joining the owner.
- Open the code-entry menu.
- Enter the code your friend sent. Copy it exactly as supplied.
Code handoff: the owner copies and sends the invitation; the Pass player enters that same code.
Once your friend has joined, start the session together.
This flow is our illustration of the developer's written invitation steps. The menu labels are text you can follow on each PC.
Already own two copies? Use online play in your full games. The guest column above is specifically the Friend's Pass menu route.

Wheelmates Friends Pass Explained: How to Play With a Friend for Free
The developer recommends this creator's video in the official invitation thread. Open it from the start or jump to the part you need:
- 0:00 — What each player installs
- 0:19 — The owner hosts and gets the code
- 0:34 — The Pass player enters the code
- 0:47 — Starting after your friend joins
Time links are approximate starting points. The written route above follows the developer's instructions.
Local split-screen on one PC
Choose local split-screen when both players are sharing one PC. Start the game on that PC and follow its on-screen prompts to bring in the second player.
The Steam page confirms split-screen support. For supported keyboard and controller combinations, check the prompts in your installed game; the published FAQ does not give a complete device setup.
If joining locally triggers a Fatal Error, check the 6 September hotfix and your installed version.
Before you start
- Update both installations. The developer asks online partners to compare the version at the bottom left of each menu, including the Pass player's version.
- Agree how you will talk. There is no built-in voice chat; the developer recommends Discord.
- Keep the code unchanged. Send the copied invitation to your partner and enter it as supplied.
Spend five minutes learning the car together
Once you are both in the game, use an open area to practice before taking a narrow route. This short routine adapts the driving and interaction topics in the community controls guide; five minutes is a suggested practice session, not a measured tutorial length.
- Read your own prompts. Check the current controls for driving, reversing and interacting. Compare the action names with your partner, since your input devices may differ.
- Turn, stop and reverse in open space. Take turns describing where you intend to move. Practice lining up with a target before adding a difficult route.
- Recognize the interaction. Compare a button you drive onto with a handle that needs a rope. Try the interaction the game has introduced and watch for its response.
- Agree on the next move. Point out the target and route, then decide who acts first. For simultaneous actions, choose one person to give the countdown.

Questions before your first session
Can I play alone or bring more than one friend?
WheelMates is for exactly two players. The Launch FAQ confirms there is no single-player mode or larger-group mode.
Will the game find a random partner for me?
No. The official English FAQ says there is no automatic matchmaking. Arrange your teammate before starting the online or local setup.
Does Friend's Pass let us play the whole adventure?
Yes. The official FAQ says one full-game owner and a Friend's Pass partner can play the full adventure together. You still need one owner; two Pass installations alone do not provide that route.
Can the owner invite different friends?
Yes. The developer confirms that the owner can invite different friends. You are not tied to one permanent partner, and each session still has two players.
Why does my Pass partner not have my Supporter Pack cosmetics?
The developer says those cosmetics belong to the full-game owner and are not shared with the Friend's Pass guest.
Can we talk through built-in voice chat?
There is no built-in voice chat. The developer recommends Discord, so arrange your voice connection separately before playing online.
Is Friend's Pass the same as Steam Remote Play Together?
No. Friend's Pass uses WheelMates' own online invitation route. In the 2 September 2026 FAQ reply, the developer said Steam Remote Play could not be added at that time and did not promise future support.
Answers come from the official invitation thread, Launch FAQ and English press-kit FAQ.
If you cannot continue
A failed invitation, a local co-op crash and an unresponsive tutorial input are different problems. Read the dated issue guide before treating a fix for one of them as a solution for all three.
The developer's local co-op Fatal Error hotfix is dated 6 September in Steam's displayed announcement. A separate DualSense input problem was acknowledged on 6 September (UTC); the sources checked for this guide do not provide a confirmed fix for that report.
Invitation steps and the recommended video were reviewed on 8 September 2026 (UTC). Other mode and hotfix sources were checked on 7 September. Patch dates follow Steam's display during our Asia/Shanghai review. Setup steps describe published developer instructions; the practice routine adapts the linked community controls guide, reviewed on 8 September.
